Nike Off-White Collaboration with Virgil Abloh

The collaboration with Virgil Abloh is one of the most successful collaborations in Nike's history. Since 2016, the founder of the off-white label has regularly designed shoe collections for Nike, which appear in limited special editions. They have triggered a real hype in the fashion world that continues to this day. The releases of new off-white sneakers are eagerly awaited by people all over the world. Some of the models were sold out immediately after their release and are now auctioned off by collectors at top prices.

How Virgil Abloh got to Nike

After completing his studies in architecture and civil engineering, the then 26-year-old certainly could not have imagined that he would one day design one of the hottest sneaker editions in the world. But maybe he did, because already as a teenager he had designed shoes together with his friends and sent the designs to Nike.

After completing his studies in 2006, he met Kanye West, for whom he initially worked for some time. This was followed in 2009 by an internship with the luxury label Fendi. Even then, he was already enthusiastic about fashion, but initially worked as creative director for various artists, including Kanye and Jay-Z.

In 2013 Abloh founded the label Off-White. Even though the main focus was on fashion, the label was supposed to act as a platform for various creative projects and combine art, music and fashion. The name Off-White stands for Abloh's preferred color range between white and gray. The collaboration with Nike began in October 2016, when he finally fulfilled his lifelong dream of designing shoes for Nike.

The Ten

The Ten was the first collection to emerge from the collaboration with Nike in 2017. Abloh was commissioned by Nike to completely reinterpret ten classic Nike silhouettes. The ten-part collection is divided into two parts, both parts differ in their aesthetics, whereby the theme of "deconstruction" runs like a red thread through the entire collection.


The first half of the collection is called "Revealing" and consists of new interpretations of the models Air Jordan 1, Air Max 90, Blazer, Air Presto and Air VaporMax. All shoes of this series are characterized by a deconstructed design.

The second half is called "Ghosting" and consists of a reinterpretation of the models Zoom Fly SP, Converse Chuck Taylor, Air Force 1 Low, Air Max 97 and React Hyperdunk. This series is characterised by the use of transparent face materials.

This collection is one of Nike's most successful limited special editions. Stars such as Kim Jones, Naomi Campell, A$AP Rocky and Drake helped to shape the campaign for the shoes.

The designs of The Ten are unique, Abloh has succeeded in deconstructing Nike classics and reassembling the individual elements of the shoes to create something completely new, while preserving the original idea of each model.

In 2018 further Colorways of this successful sneaker series appeared and also for 2019 a blue Air Force 1 is already announced, which is planned on the occasion of Abloh's exhibition in the "Museum of Contemporary Art" in Chicago.
